MA Fine Art AUB Degree show

Pernille S. R. Olsen has in Feb 2021 - Jan 2023 undertaken a part-time MA fine art degree at Arts University Bournemouth. UK. This she has completed whilst traveling as a full-time seafarer and artist with studio space in Bergen Norway.

The MA Fine Art Degree show is made public as a virtual Exhibition. The accessibility is then worldwide, in a time capsule corresponding with all time zones. The viewers can themselves hover inside of technology.

Olsen has re-visiting the idea of a vessel in drawings, painting and object making. As viewers, we can see the outline of a form where thoughts have unfolded on the surface, leaving an open portal for new associations. Humour in the work is essential to balance the undertone of concerns and views of assumptions. Shifting between figurative and abstract, the lack of visual information or clarity acts as a tool to illuminate the absurdity of the unconscious. Hoping to be both respectful and open-minded, the fragmented stories of individuals and communities are layered, revealed and retold.

Hovering as a state of mind, talks about the movement between the 3 dimensional and 2-dimensional work ongoing in the studio.

The interior of a machine can be likened to the complex workings of mind, body and familial relations – a form of ‘us’, and our shared knowledge in the human condition. A conscious and purposeful filtering occurs, as the painful, stressful, demanding or pleasurable gives way to a mundane routine that allows headspace.

Drawing out the unseen experiential connections between differing spaces and temporalities is an attempt to connect back into the world following isolation. The sense of obligation that form our social ties become central to the work. Whether sound, paintings, drawings, text, prints, sculpture, or audio-visual installation, a sensitive and poetic approach re-presents objects as metaphors of human relations.
